“Hey Jealousy!”

3 min readNov 13, 2020

The Gin Blossoms from the 90s are known for their big hit, “Hey Jealousy!” As of today, it has gotten 23 million views on YouTube. I love that song, but today I will be delving into jealousy as to how it affects people. When we are talking about jealousy as an emotional state, we are talking about the angry or unhappy feeling caused by desiring what someone else has. Being in a chronic state of jealousy damages our own life more than it does anyone else’s.

People desire happiness, but when there is a comparison from the self to another, that is where we start shooting ourselves in the foot. We will never know what it took to have exactly what another person has. On the surface, it may appear that another received what they had unfairly or doesn’t deserve what they have, etc. Continually comparing yourself to another will leave you feeling upset, emotionally disturbed and unsatisfied.

You may choose to be in a state of feeling upset or unsatisfied. If this is what you choose, you will waste your time and energy about what could have been instead of actually putting effort into changing the state of your life now. Your life will slip away as you put your focus onto someone or something that you want.

Sometimes we think that we want a particular thing in order to gain happiness, but happiness is a choice. Happiness is an emotional state. Happiness cannot be exchanged…
