How To Survive Being Single For The Holidays

When the holidays come around, it can be depressing and anxiety provoking for singles to deal with. I have spent many past holidays being single. I tried to stay away from fixating on the fact that I was not in a relationship. Sometimes when we bring our awareness to the cons of a situation, it makes it that much worse.

People want to feel acceptance, whether they are single or not, but sometimes family members, friends or loved ones hold certain viewpoints in terms of relationships and may alienate us with questions regarding our past or future. Instead of focusing on the present, they may push us into facing sensitive topics or answering questions regarding our lives. It may also feel isolating during this time being surrounded by couples doing winter activities or even going to family gatherings where couples may be.

It may feel as if you can’t cope with the feelings of anxiety, depression or isolation at this time. It may feel like you are fending for yourself and other people in relationships that are around you wouldn’t understand. It is hard to bridge those empathy and understanding gaps with exactly how it feels to be in your position when someone is in a different position than you.

If you are single, it doesn’t mean you need to feel lonely. If there are others around you in a relationship, it doesn’t…
