What Do You Do When Your Relationship Is Struggling?

3 min readJun 19, 2020

In my current relationship, I have had many ups and downs. I am not perfect. My fiancé is not perfect. We both recognize our love for each other. Our goals for ourselves and the relationship are known because we have talked about them.

We want to reach our goals, but there have been unexpected inconveniences and struggles that we have encountered along the way. I feel overwhelmed and sad when I cannot fix something immediately and when something is out of my control.

Last year in May 2019, the house that we just bought got damaged by a drunk driver. It caused around $20,000 in damages. I was exhausted from work everyday and we weren’t able to enjoy ourselves. People in the neighborhood came out of their cars and kept trying to get stories and take pictures from their vehicle. It was a nightmare.

There will be things that happen that are out of our control, but it is how we deal with and react to these challenges and struggles that will determine the overall success in the relationship.

I made sure to take pictures and videos of the damages that had happened. I followed up with a company to get our house restored. I contacted the insurance company about the home to get it covered financially. My fiancé and I went on vacations to get away from the home for periods at a time to restore our sanity.

We were both emotionally drained and when we would talk to people about what had just happened, it seemed like they didn’t believe us or have any empathy whatsoever. It was an extremely unrelatable situation that not many people will find themselves in. I didn’t try to prove to them that any of this was real, but it seemed like when I talked to co-workers and even my boss at work that they really did not care!

My fiancé and I relied on each other to get through this difficult time. We still planned times to go out and spend time with each other. Our lives did not stop just because this terrible situation had happened to us.

We were the only people that knew what we were going through. We didn’t ask to have our property damaged. We relied on each other to get through this difficult time and to get everything restored back to the way it used to be. Now, about a year later, we are focusing on our goals and back to a normal place.
