What Happens When The Ego Interferes In Relationships?
The ego means “I” in Latin. The ego can be thought of as your own identity. When we do not think about the relationship benefiting and only think of ourselves benefiting from having a person in our lives, we will encounter issues. Any relationship will become out of balance if one person looks to serve themselves over someone else.
On a personal level, we all look to feel good, but one person may have the belief that his or her desires are more important than another’s. The other person in the relationship may feel less important or have the feeling that he or she has to cater to the other and struggle with a feeling of importance about the relationship as a whole.
The relationship fails when both parties do not feel equally valued. When the mindset of the couple functioning together “goes out the window,” there is a power struggle involved. One partner may be stubborn and have his or her own ideas of how the relationship should work. Perhaps one partner feels that he or she deserves more love and attention without giving any back.
The ego is all about “I” and what is going to serve the self. When one person’s ego overrules another, the relationship’s desires and needs will not be satisfactorily met. I’ve also read in other places that the ego can be considered as a center of awareness. The…
