Why Love Is Like Flavors Of Ice Cream
I used dating profiles to see what was out there. There are so many different types of personalities and guys out there. The best metaphor that I can use is looking at an ice cream menu. There’s so many different possibilities to choose from and they are all delightful.
I picked bold and exciting flavors early on in my dating life. Maybe Cotton Candy or Sea Salt Caramel Waffle Cone. I felt like there was nothing stopping me and I had not been jaded at that point from rejection. I felt the bitter aftertaste of these bold and exciting flavors and the guilt from so many calories. I felt like I had to choose different flavors and see what else was out there.
In a lot of my encounters with love, I got to the “end of the cone” and love ended. I wanted more and wasn’t satisfied.
Every experience was different that I had. It could be dependent on what we were doing, the guy’s energy at the time and/or our location of a meetup. Sometimes love felt mellow and calm (like vanilla)… sometimes it felt energetic, bold and too much to handle (like cold brew coffee)… sometimes it felt tried and true (like chocolate).
Like ice cream, you have to enjoy it while it’s there or it melts and you lose that chance. The same with love. You can never recreate those moments in the past because time moves on. I learned most of the time to be present in the moment and enjoy what I could at the time.
Sometimes I would be sick of a certain flavor and wanted something new. When I was devoting time to a particular person, I would want to add new flavors of experiences into the time we spent together.
The flavor that I picked for my current relationship would be described as cookies and cream. It is mainly stable, mellow and calm with the vanilla, but there are lots of fun bits of cookies mixed in. The cookie bits are the unexpected surprises and adventures that we have together.
I have learned that once you choose your flavor of partner that you have to keep mixing in different bits into that flavor to keep it new and exciting. Everyone gets bored with doing the same thing over and over. No one wants to keep choosing just one flavor of ice cream for the rest of their lives. Once you find that flavor you love, you need to mix things in that you love… fruit, nuts, cookies, mint… make that perfect concoction for you!
